Asteroigs!

I drew an asteroid field! Not entirely sure why, though. Sometimes making art is like that.

I used to really enjoy the ultra-cheesy TV show Buck Rodgers in the XXVth Century, but the end credits used to really puzzle me. How did they make that effect of stars drifting toward the camera? Star Trek’s exterior shots used to puzzle me as well. As a child, I knew that space was really, really big… so how do you draw that?

Originally, this drawing was just an exercise in giving blobby shapes some form. Then, when I started inking it, I realised that it could be the sort of asteroid belt I remember from childhood TV shows. To create that effect, I used some watery gouache, and flicked it onto the paper with an old paintbrush.

One thing I should say is that I really missed the “flood fill” function whilst I was painting the background. You win that round, technology! It took ages to paint in the negative space.

Your asteroids really cheered me up! Not an easy feat on a freezing cold Monday morning – BIG THANKS FOR THAT :-)

Painting in the blank space, like doing oodles & oodles of cross-hatching or dotting, is one of the best bits of painting. VERY good for the mind, relaxing and meditative and about the link between your brain – finger – world. A definite win for ‘by hand’ over technology, in my view.
